Wildlife photographer of the year stripped of his award | The Guardian. I remember being blown away when I first saw this image – it’s an astounding capture – and thought it rightfully deserved to win the Natural History Museum’s 2009 prize. Unfortunately, though, it appears that the photographer, rather than camping out for months in the wild, instead cheated and hired a tame wolf. Oh!

Citing usage from 1949, the OED calls this mark the dog’s bollocks, which it defines as, “typogr. a colon followed by a dash, regarded as forming a shape resembling the male sexual organs.” This is why I love scrounging around the linguistic scrap heap that is the OED. I always come across a little gold. And by “gold,” I mean, “vulgar, 60-year-old emoticons.”

Though the cells were constantly regenerated, the parent entity remained exactly the same. Like hundreds of American businesses, it was obsessed with short-term profitability, the future be damned. And no one who had any serious power over I.D. seemed to understand anything about design.

Blind architects have a real feel for the site lines — Fascinating LA Times article on how Christopher Downey, an architect who lost his sight after a brain tumour, continues to work. It’s a shame there’s not more detail of his process or designs, I’d love to see what he’s doing with the Polytrauma & Blind Rehabilitation Center in Palo Alto (via Boing Boing).
